Did You Know There’s Plastic in Most Chewing Gum?

Yes, many chewing gums contain plastic or synthetic polymers. These polymers are added to the gum to give it its chewy texture and to help it maintain its flavor for longer periods. Some common plastic ingredients found in chewing gum include polyvinyl acetate and polyethylene.

As per a study commissioned by Iceland, a surprising 85% of individuals were unaware of the presence of plastic in chewing gum. Understandably, the plastic found in gum can exert adverse effects on the environment. The tiny remnants left behind from discarded gum adhered to sidewalks often contain microplastics, which can subsequently find their way into drainage systems that ultimately flow into the ocean.

It’s essential to note that while chewing gum itself may contain plastic, it’s typically not the primary source of plastic pollution in the environment. The greater concern regarding plastic pollution comes from single-use plastic items like bottles, bags, and packaging, as well as microplastics released from various sources, including textiles and cosmetics.
