Bonfire Night is back with a bang! Celebrated on (or around) November 5, is a tradition with environmental concerns due to the potential harm caused by burning certain materials. To make it eco-friendly:
- Use Natural Materials: Burning plastics, rubber, and treated wood can harm the environment and health. Opt for dry, clean, and natural materials like untreated wood or garden waste.
- Consider Wildlife: Hedgehogs and other small animals may hide in bonfires. Build them on the day of lighting or in areas with fewer animals. Be mindful of wildlife when using fireworks.
- Eco-Friendly Fireworks: Traditional fireworks release harmful chemicals. Opt for white-colored fireworks with fewer chemicals, and choose ground-based options like Catherine wheels to reduce debris.
- Check the Weather: Weather conditions impact air pollution from bonfires and fireworks. Choose a clear night with a light breeze to minimize pollution effects.
- Avoid Sky Lanterns: While visually appealing, sky lanterns pose risks to wildlife and can end up anywhere. Opt for biodegradable sky lanterns without wire to mitigate environmental impact.
