Bonfire Night – Can it be More Eco-Friendly and Still Enjoy the Celebrations

Bonfire Night is back with a bang! Celebrated on (or around) November 5, is a tradition with environmental concerns due to the potential harm caused by burning certain materials. To make it eco-friendly:

  1. Use Natural Materials: Burning plastics, rubber, and treated wood can harm the environment and health. Opt for dry, clean, and natural materials like untreated wood or garden waste.
  2. Consider Wildlife: Hedgehogs and other small animals may hide in bonfires. Build them on the day of lighting or in areas with fewer animals. Be mindful of wildlife when using fireworks.
  3. Eco-Friendly Fireworks: Traditional fireworks release harmful chemicals. Opt for white-colored fireworks with fewer chemicals, and choose ground-based options like Catherine wheels to reduce debris.
  4. Check the Weather: Weather conditions impact air pollution from bonfires and fireworks. Choose a clear night with a light breeze to minimize pollution effects.
  5. Avoid Sky Lanterns: While visually appealing, sky lanterns pose risks to wildlife and can end up anywhere. Opt for biodegradable sky lanterns without wire to mitigate environmental impact.
